Cardinals Get Defensive in 91-61 Romp Over HPU

UIW forces 23 HPU turnovers

San Antonio, Texas – UIW scored 33 points off of 23 Howard Payne turnovers and held the Yellow Jackets to just 34 percent shooting as the Cardinals won their second-straight game, 91-61, Monday evening from the McDermott Convocation Center.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Tied early in the game, UIW used a 17-4 run to take a 13-point lead, 21-8, culminated by a Jorden Kite three-pointer at the 14:19-mark of the first half.

The Yellow Jackets cut the deficit to six, but the Cardinals went back up by 13 thanks to a steal by Jalin Hart followed by a trey by Tyler Singleton, one of 12 in the game for UIW.

UIW shot 57 percent from the floor in the first half, while holding HPU to only 25 percent shooting, as the Cardinals led at the break, 41-28.

After spotting HPU the second half's first points, the Cardinals outscored HPU, 13-2 in a four-minute span to increase their lead to 21, 53-32. Another Singleton three-pointer gave UIW its largest lead of the game, 83-52, with 4:18 left in regulation.

LEADERS

Tyler Singleton scored a career-high 19 points on 7-of-11 shooting and 3-for-3 from beyond the arc to go along with a pair of free throws. Shawn Johnson led all players with 21 points, while Jalin Hart continued his strong play with 16 points, five rebounds, seven assists, one block, and three steals. Devin Wyatt registered six blocked shots, one shy of the program single-game record.

HPU's leading scorer, Rickey Guillory, paved the way for the Yellow Jackets with 14 points, followed closely by Shadd Cole with 13. J Bailey led the Yellow Jackets on the glass with a game high 10 rebounds.

QUOTES

Assistant Coach John Smith on the team's performance
"It was great to see these guys play together and have multiple guys in double figures. To see them have 18 assists means they're moving around and sharing the rock. If these guys come together and play with some comradery, we can be really dangerous."

On Devin Wyatt's performance
"Devin was egging to get back in. He only played 21 minutes and had six blocks. But we know we have a big game on Saturday against Rice and we have to have all our bullets fresh. Devin is definitely going to be a force."

Tyler Singleton on his performance
"I was just letting the game come to me. Coach has always encouraged me to stay aggressive. So I was just looking for my shots."

UP NEXT

UIW will celebrate the Thanksgiving holiday before closing its three-game home stand on Saturday, November 26 at 3 p.m. against Rice.
