Breaks Don’t Go Cards’ Way in 2-1 Loss to ACU

Haley Nelson makes six saves while Sam Batley scores for UIW

San Antonio, Texas – Despite six saves from Haley Nelson and a valiant effort offensively, things did not bounce the UIW women's soccer team's way in their season finale Friday night against Abilene Christian, as the Wildcats prevailed, 2-1.

HOW IT HAPPENED

ACU drew first blood in the 16th minute as Dylan Owens scored off a corner kick from Chloe Fifer. The Cardinals tied things up in the 39th minute as Sam Batley one-timed a pass from Brooke Hanson. Each team had seven shots in the first half.

Nelson made a tremendous glove save off of a breakaway from Brooke Lenz in the 66th minute. The Wildcats kept the pressure, however, and took a 2-1 lead in the 76th minute as Owens scored her second of the night, assisted by Sophie Standifer.

Seconds after Owens' score, UIW had two golden opportunities to tie the match, but Karey Tylman's initial shot hit the cross bar and Batley, who followed the play, scooped up the ball, but her shot hit the post. Nelson ended up making six saves for the Cardinals, the most for her in a single game since she stopped that many against Central Arkansas last month.

QUOTES FROM HEAD COACH ANNE FELTS

"I'm really proud of how we played tonight against a very good ACU team. I thought we really matched up well against them and it was a very good game. We responded very strongly after going down 1-0. After going down again and to hit the post twice in a few seconds is just unlucky. I'm proud of the way we finished the game. We never let down and never quit."
