PHOENIX – Grand Canyon University shut out the University of the Incarnate Word men's soccer team 1-0 in a Western Athletic Conference game Sunday night at GCU Stadium.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Cardinals (4-7-3, 2-3-2 WAC) were coming off an impressive 1-1 draw against the WAC's top team, Seattle U, but tonight were unable to score on Grand Canyon's defense. The Lopes (6-7-3, 3-2-3 WAC) got on the board in the 26
th minute, when their leading scorer, and the conference's top scorer, Niki Jackson scored his 14
th goal of the season on a play that was developed by Alejandro Radilla and Jaime Olabarria.
The Cardinals once again outshot their opponent. They took 11 shots, compared to GCU's eight. The Lopes' goalkeeper, Kendyl Day, had four saves to keep the Cardinals off the scoreboard and also ran into some luck. With less than a minute left to play, 
Fernando Laverde fired a beautiful left-footed shot from outside the box. The ball cleared a diving Day, but the ball hit off the crossbar.
LEADERS
Miguel Ojeda and 
O'Neal Moore led the UIW offense with three shots apiece, while Moore's two shots on goal were tops for the visiting team.
Jackson led the Lopes with four shots on the evening, while Khadim Seye followed with two shots.
GOALKEEPER DECISION
UIW's 
Jorge Guzman allowed the firs-half goal, but then came up with two saves to keep the game within reach.
The Lopes' Day had four saves and turned in his fourth shutout of the season and second in conference play.
UP NEXT
The Cardinals will play two more road games before coming back home to finish the season at home. The two road games are at UTRGV Oct. 27 and at Houston Baptist Oct. 30. Both games will start at 7 p.m.
STAY TUNED
The last game of the season will be Nov. 5 against Utah Valley at Benson Stadium at 8 p.m.
