SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word will be hosting a Southland Conference basketball doubleheader against visiting Northwestern State University on Saturday at the McDermott Center. The women's game tips off at 2 p.m. followed by the men's game at 4:30 p.m.
The UIW women are 3-10 on the season and 0-2 in conference play. The Cardinals have threatened to snap out of their slump in each of their last three games losing each by seven points or less. The team is averaging 54.9 points per game and shooting 36.0 percent from the field. They are giving up 63.2 points per game and opponents are shooting 40.5 percent.
Brianna Williams (Wylie/Mesquite HS) leads the team with 13.1 points per game while
Aricka Adams (Round Rock/Round Rock HS) chips in with 11.3 points per game.
Yvonne Maosa (Arlington/Mansfield HS) is the top rebounds at 6.0 per contest.
The Lady Demons (8-6, 2-1) were on a five game winning streak until losing, 67-46 at Abilene Christian on Thursday. Beatrice Attura and Janelle Perez are the two leading scorers for NSU. Attura is averaging 14.7 points per game and has made 20 three-pointers. Perez is averaging 13.6 points and 3.7 assists per game while leading the team with 32 three-pointers. They average 60.9 points per game and are shooting 40.2 percent from the field. They give up 62.1 points per game and opponents shoot 39.0 percent.
In the men's game, the Cardinals (5-7, 0-1) are going for their first conference win of the season.
Kyle Hittle (New Braunfels/New Braunfels HS) and
Jontrell Walker (Aurora, IL/West Aurora HS) are each scoring 15.6 points per game. Walker leads the nation in free throw percentage at 95.6 percent. Hittle is shooting 43.1 percent from three-point range and is averaging 5.6 rebounds and 2.0 steals per game. The team is scoring 75.5 percent from the field and connects on 42.3 percent of their field goals. On defense, they are averaging over nine steals per game and opponents are shooting 45.5 percent from the floor.
The Demons (3-9, 0-2) have dealt with some serious injuries this year, including the loss of star point guard Jalan West to a season-ending injury in the season opener. Zeke Woodley leads the team with 23.3 points and 5.4 rebounds per game while shooting 55.7 percent from the field and 45.1 percent from three-point range. Ishmael Lane and Sabri Thompson each chip in with 11.5 points per game while Devonte Hall leads the conference with 5.7 assists per contest. As a team, they are averaging 78 points per game, but are allowing 88 points per game.
