Fencing Competes at Western Duals

SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA – The University of the Incarnate Word men's and women's fencing teams competed at the Western Duals on Sunday hosted by UC San Diego.

The Cardinals, in their first year of competition under head coach John Moreau, saw their men finish in sixth place and their women in seventh, but they showed a lot of quality in the epee.  The men defeated California Institute of Technology, Air Force Academy and UCSD in the epee while losing to Stanford and Vassar by 5-4 scores.  Overall, they were 3-4 in the epee event, but were 0-7 in both the foil and sabre.  Alexander Sless led the men with an 18-3 record in the epee while Esteban Sanchez went 13-8 in the same event.

The UIW women went 2-3 in the epee.  They defeated Vassar, 5-4 and Air Force, 6-3.  Unfortunately, they were 0-5 in the foil and sabre.  Oksana Samorodova was the top performer for the women going 13-2 in the epee while Monet Moreau was 6-9 in the same discipline.
