Head Men’s and Women’s Fencing Coach John Moreau is in his tenth season of coaching for the Cardinals. Cardinal Fencers have qualified for the NCAA Fencing Championships every year under his tenure which earned him Varsity Collegiate Coach of the Year in 2019 from the United States Fencing Coaches Association. In 2022 he was named the inaugural Head Coach of the Year for the Mountain-Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF). Most recently John was elected to the US Fencing Association’s Hall of Fame and was inducted to the class of 2023.
Moreau was head of Texas State University’s Fencing Club winning the State Championships a record 15 times. In addition, he served as a fencing coach for the US Modern Pentathlon Olympic Training Center in San Antonio, Texas. As an elite coaching staff member for USA Pentathlon, he has taken teams to several World Championships.
His competitive career includes two Olympic Fencing Teams (1984, 1988), seven National Team Epee titles from 1980 to 2001, eight Fencing World Championships including bronze medals in 2002, 2005, and 2022, 10 US Olympic Sports Festival appearances, 13 Olympic Trials (6 Modern Pentathlon, 7 Fencing), and in 2003 won the Division 1 Epee title at the age of 52, oldest in US Fencing history.
Moreau is also currently the #1 ranked Modern Pentathlon International Judge for the United States and has officiated at major competitions around the world including World Championships, Pan American Games, Youth Olympics, and the Olympic Games in 2008 and 2012.
John has a BA in Art History from Binghamton University and a Master’s in Exercise and Sports Science from Texas State University where he was a faculty member for over 30 years. In addition to his other pursuits, he is an 8th Degree Black Belt in Kajukenbo Karate. John and his wife Natalia, a former nationally ranked Mexican fencer have three children. His youngest, Monet (Class of ’19) was a member of the first UIW Varsity Fencing Team and qualified for post-season competition every year of her collegiate career.
