SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS –The University of the Incarnate Word women's soccer team hosted Baylor University on Sunday at Benson Stadium and were dealt a 7-1 defeat.
The Bears (1-4-1) controlled the match from the outset peppering the Cardinals' (2-4-0) with shots throughout the contest. In the first half, Baylor had the majority of possession, but they were only able to score twice on
Karly Brightwell (Houston/Elkins HS) who was called upon to make eight saves in the half.
The Cardinals briefly made the game interesting at the beginning of the second half. Freshman
Emily Halal (Katy/Cinco Ranch HS) scored less than two and half minutes into the half to make it 2-1. She received a cross field pass from
Kylie Allison (Bellevue, WA/Sammamish HS) and let the ball run to her outside left foot and then she fired to the far top corner of the net from 25 yards out to put the Cardinals on the scoreboard.
The Bears regained control of the game four minutes later when Julie James scored on a rocket to the near post from the left wing. Sarah King set her up with the assist. Six minutes after that, King put the game out of reach when she scored her own goal from the left wing to the right side of the net.
The Bears had six different goal scorers in the game. Precious Akanyirige scored twice in the first half for the visitors. Overall, they attempted 27 shots to just three for the Cardinals.
