Women Put Perfect Record on the Line

SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word women's soccer team will be hosting two matches this weekend. The first will be played against the University of North Texas on Friday at 7 p.m.  The second will be against Prairie View A&M on Sunday at noon with both matches played at Benson Stadium.

The Cardinals (2-0) are coming off a pair of victories against UT-Rio Grande Valley and South Carolina State.  UIW played both teams in the UTRGV Tournament in Edinburg and emerged as champions.  Both games had to go into overtime after 90 minutes of scoreless soccer.  Abigail Koenigs (San Antonio/Brandeis HS) scored the game-winner against UTRGV and the winning goal against SCSU was scored by Emani Stewart (Victorville, CA/Hesperia HS).  The UIW goalkeepers split both games with Karly Brightwell (Houston/Elkins HS) starting and Heather Kowalik (Boerne/Champion HS) earning the wins by playing the second half and overtime periods.

Five UIW players were selected for the UTRGV All-Tournament Team. Chosen along with the goal scorers were Mikaela Noriega (Helotes/Brandeis HS), Nikki Popa (San Antonio/Reagan HS) and Shelbi Miller (San Antonio/O'Conner HS).

The Mean Green (2-0) won the University of Nevada-Las Vegas Invitational this past weekend with wins against Southern Utah, 2-1, and UNLV, 1-0.  They attempted 14 more shots than Southern Utah, but were outshot 14-5 by UNLV.  They return 10 starters from last year's squad that were Conference USA regular season champions.

Prairie View A&M (0-1) opened their season with a 5-0 loss against McNeese State and they play UTRGV on Friday night. The Panthers will be returning four players that were selected for SWAC preseason honors. Breanna Powell was named defensive player of the year along with All-SWAC First Team. Last season, the Panthers finished with 11-9 overall and 8-1 in conference.

This is the first ever meeting between the Cardinals and North Texas and they are 1-1 all-time against Prairie View A&M after the Panthers won 2-1 last year.
