EDINBURG, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word women's soccer team will conclude their UT-Rio Grande Valley Tournament experience on Sunday at 11 a.m. with a match against South Carolina State.
The Cardinals (1-0) are coming off a dramatic, 1-0 victory over host UTRGV on Friday night. Junior
Abigail Koenigs (San Antonio/Brandeis HS) provided the only goal of the match in the eighth minute of the second overtime period. Senior goalkeepers
Karly Brightwell (Houston/Elkins HS) and
Heather Kowalik (Boerne/Champion HS) combined on the shutout.
The Cardinals will have their hands full with the Bulldogs (1-0). South Carolina State knocked off Southern University in their Friday match, 5-1. They scored four consecutive second half goals to turn a 1-1 tie into a blowout win. Tierra Pullard tallied a hat trick and assisted on another goal to provide the theatrics. Alexandria Trujillo was credited with a pair of assists in the match. Hailey Austin played all 90 minutes in goal and made three saves.
This is the first ever meeting between the two teams. A win for the Cardinals would match their win total from all of last season.
