Box Score HUNTSVILLE, TEXAS – Sam Houston State finished off a three-game sweep of the University of the Incarnate Word baseball team on Saturday with a 5-0 win at Don Sanders Field.
Sam Odom of the Bearkats (19-19, 11-7) completely shut down the UIW offense limiting the Cardinals (11-23, 2-13) to just four hits and no walks while striking out 10 in a complete game victory. UIW's
Garret Cooper (Round Rock/McNeil HS) matched Odom zero-for-zero through the first three innings, but the Bearkats offense finally broke through in the fourth inning.
The Bearkats scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth inning on a sacrifice fly and a balk. In the fifth inning, Bryce Johnson hit a two-out, two-run single to make it 4-0. The final run for SHSU came in the sixth inning on a pinch-hit single by Dalton Perry.
The Cardinals only had one runner get past first base.
Braden Martin (Andrews/Andrews HS) singled in the top of the sixth inning, stole a base and went to third on a wild pitch, but Odom was able to strand him at third base.
The Cardinals are back in action on Tuesday when they travel to Baylor for a 6:35 p.m. start.
