SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word basketball teams will host a Cardinals versus Cardinals Southland Conference double header on Saturday at the McDermott Center. The women tip of the action against Lamar University at 5:05 p.m. and the men's game is set to start at 7:35 p.m.
The UIW women are 5-15 overall and 2-7 in the conference and will head into Saturday's game on the tail end of a five game losing streak. Their last win was at home against Southeastern Louisiana on January 17, but the team has been hit hard with injuries in the past few weeks.
Aricka Adams (Round Rock/Round Rock HS) leads the team with an average of 14.1 points and 4.1 rebounds per game.
Yvonne Maosa (Mansfield/Mansfield HS) has also become a leading presence on the team averaging 8.5 points and 7.1 rebounds per game.
Jazmine Holman (Arlington/Arlington Bowie HS) leads the conference in steals and is second in assists.
The Lamar Cardinals will provide a tough contest of UIW as they lead the conference with an 8-2 record and are 11-10 overall. They have two players averaging in double figures. JaMeisha Edwards leads the team with 14.5 points per game and Dominique Edwards comes in at second with an average of 12.8 points per game while also leading the team with 7.6 rebounds per game. Last year, Lamar won the 76-69 in San Antonio.
The UIW men are 12-6 overall and 4-4 in the conference, which places them in the middle of the standings. In their previous game, the Cardinals were dealt a tough loss at Texas A&M Corpus Christi by one point. UIW is 6-1 at home this season and are averaging 83.7 points per game.
Denzel Livingston (Houston/Waltrip HS) continues to lead the count with an average of 21.9 points per game, second in the Southland Conference, and also posts 6.0 rebounds. He needs 13 points to reach 1,500 for his career.
Jontrell Walker (Aurora, IL/West Aurora HS) is one of the top scoring freshmen in the nation at 17.3 points per game and leads the team with 39 three-pointers.
Kyle Hittle (New Braunfels/New Braunfels HS) chips in with 14.6 points and 6.5 rebounds per game.
Lamar comes into the game with an 11-11 record overall and are tied with UIW in the conference standings with a 5-5 record. Anthony Holliday is the team's highest scoring player, with an average of 14.8 points per game and 21.1 in conference play. Tyran de Lattibeaudiere is the Cardinals biggest inside threat with an average of 7.1 rebounds and an impressive total of 36 blocks. UIW won last year's matchup, 75-64.
The games will be broadcast on ESPN 3 and UIW will also be conducting a canned food drive for the San Antonio Food Bank.
