LUBBOCK, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word women's basketball team gave Texas Tech University all they could handle on Monday night at United Supermarkets Arena before falling 70-55.
The Cardinals (3-6) hung tight through the first half.  They trailed 13-11 after one period and were only down nine points at halftime despite shooting 27.3 percent from the field.  
Brianna Williams (Wylie/Mesquite HS) almost single-handedly kept UIW in the game with 14 points in the half.  Ivonne Cook Taylor led the Lady Raiders (7-2) with 10 points and seven rebounds in the half.
In the third quarter, the Cardinals put a scare in the Lady Raiders.  They trailed 37-26 with 6:45 left in the quarter when they went on a 12-3 run to cut the lead to two points.  
Aricka Adams (Round Rock/Round Rock HS) scored nine of the team's points, including a jumper with 1:59 left in the period to make it 40-38.  Texas Tech responded by scoring seven straight points to take a 47-38 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
In the final period, the Lady Raiders never let the Cardinals get closer than 11 points.  Leashja Grant did most of the damage for the home team scoring eight points in the first three minutes to help Tech put the game away.
The Cardinals shot 33.9 percent from the field, made 6-of-18 from three-point range and were 7-for-11 at the foul line.  Williams led all players with a career high 23 points and she drained four three-pointers.  Adams added 15 points and six rebounds on 7-of-14 shooting from the field.  The team finished with 29 rebounds and 15 turnovers.
The Lady Raiders shot 48.1 percent from the field, made 3-of-14 from three-point range and were 15-of-19 at the charity stripe.  Cook Taylor led the team with 20 points and nine rebounds on 8-of-14 shooting from the field.  Grant finished with 18 points and four blocks while making 7-of-10 from the field.  Rayven Brooks added 13 points, five assists and five rebounds.  Overall, they had 44 rebounds and committed 19 turnovers.
The Cardinals are back in action on Thursday night at 7 p.m. when they travel to UT Rio Grande Valley.
