FORT COLLINS, COLORADO – The University of the Incarnate Word women's basketball team traveled to Colorado State University on Wednesday night and lost, 60-37 at Moby Arena.
The Cardinals (1-1) struggled to score against the Rams (2-0) who limited them to 29.6 percent shooting for the game. UIW was holding close to Colorado State through the first 13 minutes of the game. An
Aricka Adams (Round Rock/Round Rock HS) three-pointer cut the CSU lead to 16-14 with 7:27 left in the second quarter.
The Cardinals missed their next 16 shots and committed six turnovers while the Rams held UIW scoreless over the final 7:32 of the second quarter and the first 3:38 of the third quarter. During that time, Colorado State scored 22 points and led 38-14 with 6:44 left in the quarter and they were able to hold on for the victory.
Incarnate Word was 16-of-54 from the field, 4-of-16 from three-point range and just 1-for-6 at the foul line.
Quincy Baker (Houston/Klein HS) had eight points and seven rebounds while Adams finished with eight points and a pair of three-pointers.
Yvonne Maosa (Arlington/Mansfield HS) came off the bench to grab seven rebounds. The Cardinals had 34 rebounds and committed 20 turnovers in the game.
The Rams shot 42.9 percent from the field, made 2-of-11 from three-point range and they made 10-of-19 from the foul line. Ellen Nystrom led all players with 21 points on 6-of-9 shooting from the field and 8-for-10 at the charity stripe. Keyora Wharry added 10 points, seven rebounds and four steals while Emilie Hesseldal grabbed 12 rebounds to lead all players. They had 42 rebounds and committed 16 turnovers.
The Cardinals are back in action on Thursday at home against Sul Ross State at 6 p.m.
