SEATTLE, WASHINGTON – The University of the Incarnate Word men's soccer team closed out their season on Sunday with a hard-fought 4-2 loss at #15 Seattle University at Championship Field.
Seattle's David Olsen collected a hat trick to knock off the Cardinals. With the win, the Redhawks (15-3, 8-1) clinched the top seed in the Western Athletic Conference for next week's tournament.
The game saw many chances for goals by both teams, but Seattle capitalized early and often. Olsen scored his ninth goal of the season in the seventh minute to open the scoring and it would not stop there. Just seven minutes later, he scored his second of the game. Then in the 39
th minute, the Cardinals committed a foul in the box that led to a penalty kick by Sam Angston for a 3-0 lead.
Right before halftime in the 44
th minute,
Ben Conway (Wigan, Eng./Hawkley Hall) put the Cardinals (8-8, 4-6) on the board with his seventh goal of the season. It would signify a second half that would be action packed.
Conway would then come back from halftime and bring the Cardinals even closer with his second goal of the game in the 50
th minute, but that would be it for UIW.
Olsen completed his hat-trick in the 75
th minute to give the Redhawks the definitive 4-2 victory.
SU outshot UIW, 26-15 with 11 shots on goal compared to six for the Cardinals.
Chase Therrien (Trophy Club/Byron Nelson HS) finished with seven saves, while the Redhawks goalkeeper, Shane Haworth, had four on the afternoon.
The Cardinals finished the season in eighth place in the WAC with 12 points. Seattle finished at the top with 24 points and only one loss in conference. They have now won their last six games heading into the conference tournament next week.
The Cardinals posted their best overall record since joining NCAA Division I prior to the 2013 season. UIW remains ineligible for WAC and NCAA postseason tournaments until the 2017 season.
