SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS –
O'Neal Moore's (Houston/Alief Taylor HS) second half goal gave the University of the Incarnate Word men's soccer team a 1-0 Western Athletic Conference win over UT Rio Grande Valley in their last home game of the season on Sunday night at Benson Stadium.
It was a slow paced game with few real opportunities at goal for either team, especially in the first half. The two teams combined for only six shots in the first 45 minutes and went into halftime scoreless. The Cardinals (8-6, 4-4) only allowed two shots in the half and attempted four.
After halftime, both teams came out stronger and looking to create more chances. UIW took advantage in the 58th minute when
Noah Keats (Exeter, Eng./The King's School) sent a short cross from inside the box that went over the goalkeeper's head that Moore headed into an empty net. It was Moore's fifth goal of the season and Keats' fourth assist that adds to his team-leading 22 points.
The Vaqueros (4-10-1, 1-6) came close to tying the game and possibly sending into extra time late in the second half. Frederik Frankman hit a free kick that ricocheted off the crossbar in the 86th minute that looked to be going in from the second the ball left his foot. Fortunately for the Cardinals, the ball did not go in, and they held on for their fourth win in the WAC, which also secured them a .500 overall record for the season.
UIW will be on the road to close out the season with arguably their two toughest matches of the season. They will face the top two teams in the WAC, Utah Valley on Thursday at 8 p.m., and Seattle University on Sunday at 3 p.m.
