SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word women's soccer team will host a pair of Southland Conference matches this weekend. They play Central Arkansas on Friday at 7 p.m. and Northwestern State on Sunday at 11 a.m.
The Cardinals (3-8, 1-2) are looking for their first home win of the season after starting out 0-4 at Benson Stadium. The team is coming off a solid road win over Nicholls from last Sunday and will try to start a winning streak. Freshman
Emani Stewart (Victorville, CA/Hesperia HS) and junior
Abigail Koenigs (San Antonio/Brandeis HS) are tied for the team lead with four goals apiece. Freshman
Emily Halal (Katy/Cinco Ranch HS) has chipped in with a goal and a team high two assists.
Defensively, freshman
Addie Bachle (San Antonio/Johnson HS) heads a group that has dealt with a number of injuries and illnesses this season. She has played a team high 828 minutes as a member of the back line. Senior
Karly Brightwell (Houston/Elkins HS) will be between the pipes for the Cardinals. She has a 2.80 goals against average and has made 66 saves on the season.
The Bears (5-6, 2-1) have been two different teams this year. They are 5-1 at home and have scored 18 goals. On the road, they are 0-5 and have scored a single goal. Camille Bassett leads the team with five goals, but she is tied for the team lead of 10 points with Shelby Wilson (4 goals, 2 assists) and Ashley Smith (3 goals, 4 assists). Anna Hughes has been the main goalkeeper for the team playing 673 minutes while posting a 1.34 goals against average, but Lauren Mercuri has also played 329 minutes with a 1.09 goals against average. Last year, the Cardinals picked up their first win of the season at Central Arkansas, 1-0.
The Lady Demons (3-6-2, 0-2-1) have a losing record, but they have outscored the opposition by six goals this year. When they win, they win big and when they lose it is usually a close game. They tied defending conference champion Stephen F. Austin in their conference opener, but then dropped home games to Lamar and McNeese State. Kayleigh Phillips leads the team with four goals and an assist while Brittany Caserma has four goals. They play a straight split at goalkeeper with Brooke Bourbonais and Alex Latham splitting time. They have nearly identical statistics and have combined on a 1.45 goals against average. Northwestern State will play Abilene Christian on Friday prior to making the trip to San Antonio. Last year, the Lady Demons defeated the Cardinals, 1-0 in Natchitoches, LA.
Both games will feature live stats and video that can be accessed through the
www.uiwcardinals.com website.
