NATCHITOCHES, LOUISIANA – The University of the Incarnate Word basketball teams embark on their first Southland Conference doubleheader of the season on Saturday when they make the trip to Northwestern State. The women's game starts at 1 p.m. and will be followed by the men's game at approximately 3 p.m.
The UIW women enter the game with a 4-9 record and 1-1 mark in the conference. They are coming off a 71-59 win over New Orleans on Thursday at home. The Cardinals are averaging 58.2 points per game while allowing 65.8 points per game.
Aricka Adams (Round Rock/Round Rock HS) leads the team with 12.8 points per game while chipping in with 3.7 rebounds and 2.8 assists per game.
Shanise Brooks (Topeka, KS/Highland Park HS) has been playing well lately shooting over 70 percent 14.7 points per game over her last three games.
The Lady Demons (8-6, 3-0) are currently sitting at the top of the Southland Conference standings. Keisha Lee and Janelle Perez are both averaging 10 points per game while Chelsea Rogers leads the team with 5.6 rebounds per game. They average 58.7 points per game and are allowing 60.9 points per game.
The men's game features the top two scoring teams in the league. The Cardinals (8-3, 0-1) come in averaging 82.5 points per game while the Demons (6-7, 1-1) are averaging 80.8 points per game.
The Cardinals are finishing up a school-record seven game road trip. A win over the Demons would make them 4-3 in the swing. The team is led by senior guard
Denzel Livingston (Houston/Waltrip HS) who is fourth in the nation with 21.5 points per game while leading the team in rebounds and steals. Freshman
Jontrell Walker (Aurora, IL/West Aurora HS) is averaging 17.9 points per game and is an 85.7 percent foul shooter.
Kyle Hittle (New Braunfels/New Braunfels HS) chips in with 13.8 points and 6.4 rebounds per game while shooting 53.8 percent from three-point range.
The Demons feature a dynamic duo in the backcourt in point guard Jalan West and shooting guard Zeek Woodley. West leads the nation with 7.8 assists per game and is averaging 16.2 points per game. He is one of the front runners for the conference player of the year award. Woodley leads the conference and is second in the nation in scoring at 21.8 points per game. He is shooting 56.2 percent from the field and 38.1 percent from three-point range while grabbing 5.1 rebounds per game.
Last year, Northwestern State swept a doubleheader against the Cardinals in Natchitoches. The Lady Demons won 72-66 and the men won 100-84. The Cardinals will try to flip the results this year.
