HOUSTON, TEXAS – On their third consecutive away match, the University of the Incarnate Word men's tennis team were defeated 6-0 by Rice University on Friday.
The Owl's (2-1) were on top form against the Cardinals (0-3) after the matches were moved indoors. With no doubles matches, both teams went straight into singles action.
The first match to be completed was at the #3 seed, with
Tucker Brown falling to Max Andrews in a 6-1, 6-1 match. The #4, #5 and #6 matches followed in line with the Owls taking all three of the matches in two sets.
Leonard Ivic and
Josip Smoljan both took their matches to a third set, but fell at the final hurdle in the tie break. Ivic was defeated by Srikar Alla 6-0, 6-7, 7-4, while Jamie Malik wrapped up his match against Smoljan 6-3, 6-7, 7-3.
The Cardinals have their first home fixture of the season next Friday when they host South Dakota State University at 2 p.m.
