HUNTSVILLE, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word women's basketball team opens their Southland Conference schedule on Saturday at 2 p.m. at Sam Houston State. The game will be played at the Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum.
The Cardinals (3-8) went 2-12 in the Southland Conference last year, the team's first as a member. The 2014-15 Cardinals will be attempting to snap a 10-game conference losing streak. UIW is 1-4 on the road this year.
The Cardinals are averaging 57.3 points per game while allowing 67.0 points per game.
Aricka Adams (Round Rock/Round Rock HS) is the team's leading scorer with 13.4 points per game while shooting 43.0 percent from the field.
Shanise Brooks (Topeka, KS/Highland Park HS) is coming off a 19-point, 17-rebound performance against Grand Canyon and is now averaging 7.2 points and 5.3 rebounds per game.
Haley Frias (Georgetown/Georgetown HS) is the top three-point shooter on the squad at 38.6 percent.
The Bearkats (1-9) have also struggled this season. They are averaging 53.7 points per game and they allow 69.1 points per game. Shernise Robertson leads the team with 14.8 points and 3.2 steals per game. Taylor Dorsey is averaging 11.8 points and 5.1 rebounds per contest.
Last year, the Cardinals and Bearkats met once in San Antonio. Sam Houston State won that game, 60-51 after trailing 33-23 at the half. This year, neither of the two teams was predicted to finish very high in the Southland Conference. Sam Houston State was picked 10
th in the conference preseason poll put out by the sports information directors while the Cardinals were picked 12
th.
