SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word hosts a Southland Conference basketball doubleheader on Saturday against Southeastern Louisiana at the McDermott Center. The women's game starts at 2 p.m. followed by the men's game 30 minutes after the conclusion of the women's game.
The UIW women are 4-10 overall and 1-2 in the conference. They have been off for the past week after losing at Northwestern State last Saturday. The Cardinals are 3-3 at home this year and won their last home contest on January 8 against New Orleans, 71-59. The team is led by junior
Aricka Adams (Round Rock/Round Rock HS) who is averaging 12.8 points and 3.8 rebounds per game. Freshman
Haley Frias (Georgetown/Georgetown HS) is the top outside shooter on the team with 28 three-pointers while
Shanise Brooks (Topeka, KS/Highland Park HS) has become a strong inside presence with 8.3 points and 5.8 rebounds per game.
The Lions (6-9, 2-2) started the season slowly, but have been playing better over the past month. Symone Miller leads the team with 13.7 points per game while Nanna Pool is averaging 12.1 points and 9.6 points per game. Elizabeth Styles runs the point guard spot with 5.9 assists and 10.9 points per game. Last year, the Lions defeated the Cardinals, 67-55 in Hammond, LA.
The UIW men are 9-4 overall with a 1-2 mark in the conference. The team is a perfect 5-0 at home this year and 19-1 over the past two years. The Cardinals are averaging 85.1 points per game, second best in the nation. They are led by senior guard
Denzel Livingston who is averaging 23.0 points, 6.0 rebounds and 3.3 assists per game. He is second in the nation in scoring. Freshman
Jontrell Walker (Aurora, IL/West Aurora HS) is fourth in the conference with 17.7 points per game while junior
Kyle Hittle (New Braunfels/New Braunfels HS) chips in with 14.7 points per game while shooting 51.9 percent from three-point range.
Southeastern Louisiana comes into the game with a 4-12 record and 1-2 conference record. They are 0-11 on the road this season. The team is led by Zay Jackson and Joshua Filmore. Jackson is averaging 16.0 points and 4.1 assists per game while Filmore is scoring 13.4 points per game and has made 44 three-pointers. Last year, the Lions edged the Cardinals, 76-72 at home.
