XC Hosts Alamo City Opener

SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – The Alamo City Opener cross country meet has been hosted by Trinity University in the past, but this year the University of the Incarnate Word will take over host duties.  The meet is scheduled for Friday at the Live Oak City Park with the women's race at 6:30 p.m. followed by the men's race at 7:15 p.m.

The Cardinals are entering their second year as a member of the Southland Conference and NCAA Division I under the tutelage of 10th year head coach Derek Riedel.  The races will be run on 1,000-meter loops with the women's race covering 4K and the men's race going 6K.

The meet will feature a majority of the local college squads with UTSA, Texas State, Trinity, Our Lady of the Lake and Texas Lutheran all sending teams.  The overall meet will be scored with Division I teams in one group and all others in a second group.

The Cardinals will be running full in both races.  The UIW women return a strong group that will be led by junior Rainy Castaneda (Laredo/United South HS), sophomore Christina Rivera (Brownsville/Rivera HS) and junior Clementine Kauffman (Hyeres, France/Lycee Notre Dame des Minimes).  Castaneda has been the team's fastest runner in practice while Rivera and Kauffman are both much improved over last season, their first at the collegiate level.

The UIW men team's will be much improved over last year.  They return twin brothers Marcos and Mario Mora (Converse/Judson HS) who were the top two runners in 2013.  Riedel also brought in a strong recruiting class and expects to have three freshmen in the top five.
