Box Score SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word baseball team defeated visiting UT-Pan American, 6-2 on Tuesday night at Sullivan Field. The Cardinals (14-27) swept the Broncs (19-27) 2-0 in the season series.
The Cardinals scored twice in the first and twice in the second innings.
Ethan McGill drove in the first run with a two-out single through the right side of the infield and then
Jesse Hoover (Marion/Marion HS) scored the second run on a wild pitch. In the second inning, Hoover came through with a two-out, two-run single to make it 4-0.
UIW tacked on lone runs in the fourth and fifth innings. McGill drove in his second run of the game with a two-out double in the fourth and it was
Mark Whitehead (San Antonio/Johnson HS) coming through with a two-out single in the fifth to score
Dustin Cole.
Jacob Potts (Glendale, AZ/Browne HS) started the game on the mound for the Cardinals. He tossed three shutout innings and was able to get out of a bases loaded jam in the second inning. He struck out three and allowed two hits.
Cody Richey (Comfort/Comfort HS) relieved Potts in the fourth inning and faced the minimum of batters in his three innings. He gave up a lone single that was erased by a double play. Richey was credited with the win to improve to 3-2 on the season.
"We did a better job pitching and have to take that to the weekend games," said UIW head coach Dan Heep. "The wind was blowing in today so it was a little easier to just throw strikes. I'm glad to see Potts get a decent outing."
The Broncs rallied in the seventh inning. The first four batters of the inning reached base scoring one. With the bases loaded Blake Thomas hit a sacrifice fly to deep center field and the Cardinals were able to double up the runner who had been on second base for an important double play. The two runs were all UTPA was able to muster for the game.
The Cardinals finished the game with nine hits. McGill led the way going 3-for-4 with two RBI's and a double. Hoover extended his hitting streak to 17 games with his single in the second inning. He drove in two runs and also walked twice.
Bryce Shepherd (Coldspring/Coldspring-Oakhurst HS) added a pair of hits.
"He's (McGill) a guy that can drive the ball for us and that is what we lack," said Heep. "It helps a lot because if you lose someone from the middle of your lineup then you start to play guys in those spots that should not be there. Offensively, he has helped us. We are scoring more runs in the last few games, but we just have to put it all together."
Kyle Tokunaga took the loss for the Broncs. He allowed two hits, four walks and four runs in 2.0 innings. Tanner Dickerson was solid in relief scattering seven hits and three walks while allowing just one earned run in 5.0 innings. Alex Howe went 2-for-4 with a run scored to lead the offense while Dillon Engelhart was 1-for-2 with a run scored and two walks.
The Cardinals are back in action on Friday at 6:30 p.m. at home against Northwestern State.
