Volleyball Closes Season with Two Losses

PHOENIX, ARIZONA – The University of the Incarnate Word lost a pair of three set matches on Saturday at the Grand Canyon University Invitational to close out the 2014 season.  They lost to Omaha 25-21, 25-16, 25-20 and to UMass-Lowell 25-20, 25-23, 25-22.

In the first match of the day, the Cardinals (10-24) only had two fewer kills than the Mavs (14-18), but they committed 13 more attack errors.  UIW finished with a .099 attack percentage.  Angelique Vidaurri (San Antonio/Southwest HS) and Bryaunea Hall (Copperas Cove/Copperas Cove HS) each had 10 kills apiece.  Hall led the team with a .421 attack percentage.  Madison Williams (New Braunfels/Canyon HS) while Alexa Lezak (Lake Jackson/Brazoswood HS) had 11 digs.

The Mavs had 39 kills, 35 digs, 13 blocks and a .255 attack percentage.  Michaela Schimmer tallied 11 kills and six blocks while Megan Schmale had nine kills and eight blocks.  Sydney O'Shaughnessy had a strong performance with 32 assists, six kills and six digs.

The Cardinals did not fare much better in the second match of the day against the River Hawks (4-29).  Despite playing each set close, UIW was unable to take any of the sets as there were a total of 14 ties and nine lead changes.

The Cardinals actually had six more kills than UMass-Lowell, but attack errors and service errors tilted the match in favor of the River Hawks.  Vidaurri led the team with 14 kills and moved into 11th place on the school's career kills list with 900.  Shaina Garza (San Antonio/Warren HS) had eight kills, 10 digs and a .467 attack.  Jordan Reifsteck (Allen/Oswego East HS) led the team with 12 digs while Williams had 15 assists.

Lauren Bennett and Anisa Smith each had at least a .500 attack percentage for the River Hawks.  Smith had 10 kills, seven digs and three blocks.  Kylee Chun handed out 26 assists as the team had a .280 attack percentage.

The Cardinals have now concluded their second season as a member of NCAA Division I and the Southland Conference.
