SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word women's basketball team opens their 2014-15 season Friday when they host Texas Wesleyan University at 6:00 p.m. at the McDermott Center.
The Cardinals were picked to finish 12
th in the Southland Conference this season in the preseason polls. In her first year as head coach,
Kate Henderson led the team to an 8-19 overall record and 2-12 in conference in the 2013-14 season.
In her second year, Henderson has brought a whole new team to UIW. The only returner who played last year is sophomore
Alyssa Ward (Palmetto, FL/Palmetto HS), who averaged 3.0 points and 2.8 rebounds per game. She also led the team in steals with 39.
Senior guard
Cheyenne Berry (Lytle/Lytle HS) red-shirted in the 2013-14 season, but she brings playing experience to this Cardinals roster. She played a season at Stephen F. Austin and two years at Tarleton State.
Shanise Brooks (Topeka KS/Highland Park HS) is another player to watch for UIW. She played two years at Seward County Community College. In her last year, she shot 51.6 percent from the field and averaged 15.0 points, 7.8 rebounds and 2.2 blocks per game.
The Lady Rams started the season earlier in the month. They have an overall record of 4-2 with their last loss coming to Texas Christian University, 86-40, last Sunday in Fort Worth. In their six games this season, they are shooting 41.8 percent from the field and are averaging 79.2 points, 40.7 rebounds, 18.0 assists and 3.5 blocks per game. The Lady Rams leading scorer is junior guard Onyesonam Nolisa. She is averaging 12.4 points per game and also leads the team in rebounds with 11.6 per game. Stacey Darnley leads the team in assists with 4.2 per game.
Fans who bring two cans of food will receive free admission to the game and the men's game that follows. The canned food drive is led by the UIW Student-Athlete Advisory Council.
