NATCHITOCHES, LOUISIANA – The University of the Incarnate Word women's soccer team travels to Southland Conference rivals Northwestern State and Stephen F. Austin this weekend to close out the 2014 season. They play Northwestern State on Friday at 7 p.m. and Stephen F. Austin on Sunday at 1 p.m.
The Cardinals (2-11-3, 2-4-3) are playing their best soccer of the season since the calendar switched to October. The team lost its first 10 contests of the season, but is 2-1-3 in October. The defense has been led by the play of central defenders
Ashley Crabbe (San Antonio/Reagan HS) and
Megan Stokes (Denton/Guyer HS) and goalkeeper
Heather Kowalik (Boerne/Champion HS). They have three shutouts in their last six games and Kowalik sports a 1.42 goals against average.
The Lady Demons (4-12-1, 1-7-1) have three blowout victories, but have struggled in close games this year. Esdeina Gonzalez leads the team with seven goals and an assist while Cassandra Briscoe has four goals and two assists while converting all three of her penalty kick attempts. Alex Latham is the team's regular goalkeeper. She has a 2.60 GAA with 76 saves and no shutouts. Last year, the Cardinals defeated the Lady Demons, 5-0 in San Antonio.
The Lady Jacks (13-2-1, 9-0-0) have already clinched the Southland Conference regular season title. Their only two losses have come against ranked opponents and they have outscored their opponents, 38-10 on the season. Chelsea Raymond and Zuri Prince have each score eight goals and combined for 10 assists while Hanna Barker has six goals and three assists. Goalkeeper Morgan Glick has been outstanding with a 0.57 GAA and 63 saves. She has been credited with 7.0 shutouts. Last year, the teams tied 1-1 in San Antonio.
