NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA – The University of the Incarnate Word volleyball team snapped a three-game losing streak with a four-set win at Southland Conference foe New Orleans on Saturday 32-30, 25-16, 18-25, 25-15.
The Cardinals (7-17, 3-8) changed up their normal rotation system and wen with a single setter, freshman
Madison Williams (New Braunfels/Canyon HS). Williams was ready for the challenge as she dished out 53 assists, the most by a UIW player since the 2009 season. The team had three players with at least 10 kills in the match.
The first set proved to be the highest scoring one of the season for UIW. The teams went back and forth with the Privateers holding a slight lead through most of the set. New Orleans had six set points, but were unable to convert any of them. UIW finally took the set thanks to
Shaina Garza (San Antonio/Warren HS). Garza's kill tied the match at 30-30 and then
Meaghan Patterson (Helotes/O'Connor HS) put the team in the lead with a kill and Garza ended it with a service ace.
The second set was much easier for the Cardinals as they used a 10-2 run to take control of the set. The Privateers returned the favor in the third set with a 9-3 run of their own to take the set. The fourth set was a similar affair with the Cardinals closing out the match without much of a fuss.
The Cardinals finished the match with 60 kills, 54 digs and 6.0 blocks with a .333 attack percentage.
Bryaunea Hall (Copperas Cove/Copperas Cove HS) led the team with 14 kills while posting a .409 attack percentage. Garza finished with 13 kills, seven digs and a .571 attack while Patterson added seven kills and a .545 attack.
Angelique Vidaurri (San Antonio/Southwest HS) was the third player on the team with over 10 kills. She had 13 kills.
Brittani Dear (La Vernia/La Vernia HS) just missed a double-double with 10 digs and nine kills while
Claudia Hernandez (San Antonio/Antonian HS) led the team with 19 digs.
The Privateers finished the match with 42 kills, 40 digs and 7.0 blocks. Cara Sander led the team with 12 kills while Rondolyn Bryant added 10 kills. Sara Hammoutene dished out 39 assists and added nine digs.
