SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word volleyball team lost in straight sets to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, 25-20, 25-22, 25-10 on Thursday night at the McDermott Center.
This was the first home match for the Cardinals (6-15, 2-6 SLC) in almost three weeks and only their third one of the season. They are now 1-2 at home this year.
The first set of the match began in even fashion. There were four lead changes and six ties in the early going before the Islanders (11-12, 4-2 SLC) took control of the set. When the score was tied 11-11, the Islanders scored the next three points and were able to hold UIW at an arm's length. They scored the final three points of the set to put it away.
The second set was the best set offensively for the Cardinals. They hit .212 with 12 kills, but it was not enough. The score was all tied up 21-21 when the Islanders used back-to-back kills from Brittany Gilpin to swing the momentum their way, and ultimately they won four of the next five points to take the set.
The Cardinals came out very flat for the third set with the Islanders taking eight of the first nine points. UIW committed 11 errors and had a negative hitting percentage for the set and never threatened the Islanders. The visitors ran away with the final set to earn the victory.
The Cardinals finished the match with 29 kills, 38 digs and 6.0 blocks.
Brittani Dear (La Vernia/La Vernia HS),
Bryaunea Hall (Copperas Cove/Copperas Cove HS), and
Angelique Vidaurri (San Antonio/Southwest HS) each had seven kills each.
Kaitlyn Brooks (Sugar Land/Fort Bend Austin HS) led the team dishing out 17 assist and Jordan Reifstek (Allen/Oswego East HS) led defensively with 12 digs. Hall posted a .429 attack percentage for the match.
The Islanders had 37 kills, 41 digs, 5.0 blocks and a .242 attack percentage. Brianna Brink led the team with 10 kills and seven digs while Gilpin had seven kills anda .583 attack. Chelby Stanford led the team with 17 digs while Hailey King had 12 digs.
The Cardinals are back at home Saturday when they host Houston Baptist University at 2:00 p.m. at the McDermott Center.
