SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word men's soccer team heads out to California this weekend for more Western Athletic Conference action against CSU Bakersfield and San Jose State University. They kick off against the Roadrunners on Friday at 9 p.m. and the Spartans on Sunday at 5 p.m.
The Cardinals (3-6, 2-0) head West coming off a series sweep against Houston Baptist University with two strong performances that will put them in good stead for one of their toughest weekend schedules of the season. The Cardinals are currently in second place in the WAC. They have scored 12 goals on the season and allowed 12 goals.
Noah Keats (Exeter, England/The King's School) is the top scorer on the squad with five goals and three assists.
Joe Brown (Nottingham, England/The Becket School) and
Alex Hoyl (Dallas/Highland Park HS) have been holding down the back line while
Kieran O'Boyle (Blackpool, England/St. Mary's Catholic) sits in goal with a 1.36 goals against average and two shutouts.
The Roadrunners (8-3-1, 2-1) have had a strong season so far and despite a 4-2 loss against Air Force last weekend, lead the conference in goals scored, assists made and shots fired. Freshman forward Julian Zamora leads the offense with a total of eight goals and one assist. In goal for Bakersfield is sophomore Nicolas Clever who has four shutouts and only a 0.96 goals against average.
UIW then head to San Jose State University (3-7-1, 1-1-1) to play on Sunday at 5 p.m. The Spartans tied their most recent game 1-1 against UM-Kansas City after winning 5-1 against Air Force a few days before. Rory Knibbs leads the Spartans offense with a total of seven goals and two assists. In goal, Felix Petermann has become the first choice goalkeeper with 31 saves on the year and a 1.91 goals against average.
