Demons Run Past Cardinals

Box Score NATCHITOCHES, LOUISIANA – A 17-0 first half run and a 27-point, 10-assist night by Northwestern State star guard Jalan West proved to be a difficult combination for visiting University of the Incarnate Word to handle on Thursday night in Southland Conference men's basketball action.  The Demons topped the Cardinals, 100-86 at the Prather Coliseum in front of 2,512 fans.

The Cardinals (16-4, 4-3) jumped out to an early 11-4 lead, but the rest of the first half would belong to the Demons (8-11, 4-4), the top-scoring team in the conference.  After UIW pulled to within 22-20 on a free throw by Anthony Horton (League City/Clear Creek HS), the Demons embarked on a 17-0 run and would go into the half with a 47-30 lead.

The NSU lead ballooned to 30 points six minutes into the second half, before the Cardinals finally got their offense going.  They would score 48 points in the final 14:08 of the game, but it was too late.

The Cardinals shot just 25.7 percent from the field in the first half before rebounding in the second half to shoot 53.1 percent.  They were held to 38.8 percent shooting for the game, only the second time they have been held under 40 percent all season long.  They did connect on 15-of-32 three-point attempts and were 19-of-33 at the foul line.

Kyle Hittle (New Braunfels/New Braunfels HS) led UIW with 23 points on 8-of-17 shooting from the field.  Denzel Livingston (Houston/Waltrip HS) added 20 points, five assists and four rebounds while Horton, Sam Burmeister (San Antonio/Churchill HS) and Mitchell Badillo (Houston/Cy Falls HS) each finished in double figures.  UIW was out-rebounded, 45-38.

The Demons shot 50.7 percent from the field, made 11-of-18 from three-point range and were 19-of-22 at the charity stripe.  West went 7-of-11 from the field and 9-for-9 from the foul line as part of his double-double.  Brison White added 24 points and grabbed five rebounds.  Zeek Woodley and DeQuan Hicks each scored in double figures.  Marvin Frazier led the team with nine rebounds and four blocks.

The Cardinals head to Stephen F. Austin on Saturday at 6 p.m. to take on the Jacks who are undefeated in conference play.
Livingston extended his streak of games scoring at least 17 points to 11 straight for the Cardinals.
