UIW Falls to Bonnies

Box Score PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA – The University of the Incarnate Word men's soccer hit the road this week and took on St. Bonaventure in a neutral site game at Duquesne on Friday and lost 2-1.

The Cardinals (1-2) jumped out to an early lead when Alex De La Garza scored when he drilled a shot into the right corner from the left side of the box at 5:23. Leon Taylor was credited with the assist. The Bonnies (3-0) battled back by earning a number of chances in the first half. They finally broke through when Garrett Pasono headed home a corner kick from Brad Vanino at 30:00.

The Cardinals nearly reclaimed the lead less than four minutes later when De La Garza hit the post on a shot. Late in the first half, both teams had chances that were turned away by goalie Jarred Kahan of UIW and Jeremy Figler of St. Bonaventure.

The Bonnies grabbed the lead at the start of the second half when Emmett O'Connor rifled in a shot from 30 yards out at 47:54.

Both teams earned chances going forward. Late in the game, the Cardinals made a push. Jonathan Camarena forced a Figler save with 4:15 remaining and then the team earned a pair of corner kicks that could not convert. The final chance for UIW came on a header by James Nero with 70 second to play, but Figler made the save.

Figler finished the match with seven saves and faced a total of 13 shots from the Cardinals. The Bonnies fired a total of 12 shots with Kahan making four saves. Each team earned three corner kicks.

The Cardinals are back in action on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Duquesne.
