Women's Soccer at Home this Weekend

SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word women's soccer team is returning to the pitch this weekend against Texas Southern University on Friday at 7 p.m., and against Our Lady of the Lake on Sunday at 7 p.m., at Benson Stadium.

The Cardinals are coming off two consecutive home wins where they dominated opponents Prairie View A&M (3-1) and Texas A&M-International University (6-0) to open the season.

UIW has seen some great leadership by the upperclassmen to start off the season.  Senior Sydney Solomon (Schertz/Randolph HS) is using her speed to break down the defense.  She scored the first goal for the UIW athletics' program as an NCAA Division I member against Prairie View A&M and then contributed a goal and two assists against TAMIU.

Senior Katie Miller (Tyler/Tyler JC) has also been one of the forces that is causing the opposing defense a lot of trouble.  Against Texas A&M-International, Miller found the back of the net on two occasions.

In the defensive end, both sophomore goalkeepers, Heather Kowalik(Boerne, Champion HS) and Karly Brightwell (Houston, Elkins HS) worked together to shut out TAMIU and limit Prairie View A&M to one goal.

Texas Southern has had a slow start to the season with five losses while being outscored 39-8.  Freshman Ruth Giraldo has set the standard for the Tigers as she leads the team with four goals scored.

Our Lady of the Lake has had two wins at home against the University of Houston-Victoria (3-2) and the University of Science and Arts. [Okla.] (3-2). Leading the Saints offense is Victoria Vazquez with three goals on the season.

The Cardinals are looking forward to starting the season 3-0 for the first time since 2009.  If they continue their winning streak into Sunday, it will be the first time since 2001 to start the season with a 4-0 record.  That season, UIW won their first nine games to finish 18-2.
