Box Score SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word volleyball team saw their perfect home record snapped at the hands of Angelo State on Friday night 25-17, 14-25, 25-21, 25-23 at the McDermott Center.
The Cardinals (5-5) and Rambelles (9-2) played an evenly matched game, but the visitors were able to come through with a few more crucial points when needed. After the teams split the first two sets, UIW and ASU were tied 19-19 in the third set when the Belles were able to pull away behind the strong service of Maddie Huth and a couple of kills by Kaelen Valdez.
In the fourth set it appeared that the Cardinals were going to even the match and force a fifth set. They led 14-10, but then the Belles scored eight straight points behind the service of Haley Bianco and three more kills by Valdez to take the lead. UIW was able to battle back by scoring three straights points after facing match point, but a block by Bianco and Huth ended the Cardinals chances at victory.
The Cardinals finished the match with 53 kills, 61 digs, 12.0 blocks and a .211 attack percentage.
Shaina Garza (San Antonio/Warren HS) and
Angelique Vidaurri (San Antonio/Southwest HS) each had 16 kills for the team and only a total of eight attack errors.
Brittani Dear (La Vernia/La Vernia HS) posted a second straight double-double with 10 kills and 17 digs while
Meaghan Patterson (Helotes/O'Connor HS) was strong at the net with 10 total blocks.
Danielle Suarez (San Antonio/Antonian HS) and
Taylor McClelland (Cypress/Cypress Ranch HS) combined for 43 assists.
The Belles had 56 kills, 66 digs, 8.0 blocks and a .216 attack. Valdez led the offense with 15 kills, a .371 attack and 12 digs. Courtney Bartusiak came off the bench in the final two sets and had 10 kills and a .714 attack percentage. Maggi Jo Keffury directed the offense with 42 assists and added 13 digs while Huth contributed 12 kills and six blocks.
The Cardinals are back in action on Saturday at 2 p.m. against Southland Conference rival McNeese State at home.
