Volleyball Drops Conference Opener

Box Score TULSA, OKLAHOMA – The University of the Incarnate Word volleyball team was unable to take the momentum from the team's big win over Texas Tech on Monday into their Southland Conference season opener on Thursday night at Oral Roberts.  ORU won the match in straight sets 25-17, 25-17, 25-19 at the Aerobics Center.

The Cardinals (4-3, 0-1) were unable to slow down the attack of the Golden Eagles (9-2, 1-0) who posted attack percentages over .300 in both the first and third sets.  UIW went to sophomore Angelique Vidaurri (San Antonio/Southwest HS) for 13 of their 32 kills, but she did not get enough help to pose a real threat to ORU.

The Golden Eagles finished the match with 43 kills and a .272 attack.  McKenna Qualls led the team with 12 kills, 12 digs and a .308 attack percentage.  Sara Pope added 10 kills while Laura Taylor directed the offense with 35 assists and contributed eight digs.  Bruna Silva led the team with 17 digs.

The Cardinals had 32 kills, 39 digs and 7.0 blocks in the match.  Vidaurri finished with 13 kills and a .235 attack.  Danielle Suarez (San Antonio/Antonio HS) led the team with 16 assists while Shaina Garza (San Antonio/Warren HS) and Sarah Cardenas (San Antonio/O'Connor HS) each had nine digs.  Meaghan Patterson (Helotes/O'Connor HS) led all players with five blocks in the match.

The Cardinals are back in action on Saturday at Central Arkansas for a 2 o'clock start.
