Cardinals Drop Series Finale

STEPHENVILLE, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word baseball team dropped the final game of a four-game series at Lone Star Conference rival Tarleton State on Sunday, 11-3.  The win game the Texans (23-11-1, 12-4) and 3-1 series win. (Box Score)

The Texans had runners on base in every inning and scored in all but the fourth inning of play.  They held an early 3-0 lead before the Cardinals (21-14, 7-9) pulled to within 3-2 on a two-run homer by Zac Russell in the top of the third inning.

That would prove to be as close as the Cardinals would get in the game.  The Texans responded with a pair of solo home runs in the third inning from Colten Boothe and Rustin Thomas.  The Cardinals added a run in the fifth inning, but left too many runners on base, 10 and hit into too many double plays, 2, to seriously threaten the Texans.

The Cardinals finished the game with 10 hits as Derrick Walls and John Zule each had three hits in the game.  Jason Stone added a two-hit performance.  Sophomore Dylan Boss took his second loss of the weekend on the mound.  He allowed four hits and three earned runs in 3.0 innings of work.

The Texans rapped out 12 hits in the game, including three home runs and two doubles.  Thomas finished the game 4-for-4 with two doubles, a home run, three runs and two RBI's.  Nico Moran was the only other player on the team with at least two hits.  Garrett Kelly picked up the win after pitching 4.0 strong innings of relief.  He allowed three hits, one unearned run and one walk while striking out four.

The Cardinals will try to get back on track on Tuesday night at 6 p.m. against St. Edward's at Sullivan Field.
