STEPHENVILLE, TEXAS - A four game winning streak by the Incarnate Word baseball team came to an end with an 11-1 loss to Tarleton State this afternoon at the Cecil Barlow Baseball Complex. (Box Score)
The Texans (21-10-1) struck early scoring one run in each of the first two innings. Ryan Small got things started with an RBI single up the middle to get the early advantage. Fola Lajide doubled the lead in the second when he scored after an error by Zac Russell (San Antonio/Cisco JC).
The Cardinals (20-12) got their lone run in the third inning when Lukas Miller (Boise, ID/Treasure Valley JC) drove home Blake Woosley (Corvallis, OR/Chemeketa CC) on an RBI single to center field. Derrick Walls (San Antonio/Reagan HS) extended his on-base streak to 17 games when he was walked in the third inning.
The dagger came in the fourth inning when the Texans scored six runs. Alvaro Moreno cleared the bases with a grand slam pushing the Tarleton State lead to 8-1. For Moreno that was his fourth home run on the season and his 37th RBI. Tarleton added three more runs in the fifth inning to completely put the game away.
Geno Encina (San Antonio/Brandeis HS) got the loss for the Cardinals pitching 3.0 innings giving up three hits and two runs. Matt Buckmaster got the win for the Texans pitching a complete game giving up just five hits and one run striking out five in the process.
The two teams will continue the series tomorrow with a double-header starting at 1:00 p.m. at the Cecil Barlow Baseball Complex in Stephenville.
