Baseball Hosts Greyhounds in Critical Series

SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word baseball team is hosting a critical Lone Star Conference series this weekend against Eastern New Mexico at Sullivan Field.  The teams will play Friday at 6 p.m., a doubleheader on Saturday at 3 p.m. and a final game on Sunday at 1 p.m.

The Cardinals (21-15, 7-9) enter the series with a one game lead over the Greyhounds (19-16, 6-10) for the final LSC Tournament spot.  After this weekend, there will be only eight games remaining in the conference schedule for both teams.

UIW is hitting .313 as a team and has outscored the opposition 251-173 this year, but are only 4-9 in one-run games.  Junior shortstop Derrick Walls (San Antonio/Reagan HS) leads the conference in walks (38), runs (46) and stolen bases (30) while hitting a cool .395.  Senior second baseman John Zule (San Antonio/Stevens HS) is hitting .385 with nine doubles and 28 RBI's.  The pitching staff is led by junior Alexis Garza (McAllen/McAllen HS) who is 4-0 with a 1.17 earned run average and 34 strikeouts in 30.2 innings.

The Greyhounds are the top hitting team in the conference with a .343 batting average.  Peter Creamer, Luis Quinones and Colton Sims are each hitting over .400 for the year.  Unfortunately for ENMU their pitching staff has not been as good with a 6.84 earned run average.  Jaspreet Shergill has a 4.86 ERA and a 2-4 record.
