SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word baseball team suffered a fourth straight one-run loss on Friday night against visiting Lone Star Conference rival Angelo State in the series opener at Sullivan Field, 10-9. (

The Cardinals (15-9, 1-4) were unable to hold onto a 9-6 lead as the Rams (16-9, 2-3) scored four times in the seventh inning to take the lead. The big hit was a two-out, two-run single by Tyler Coughenour to give ASU a lead they would not relinquish.
The Cardinals threatened to score in both the seventh and eighth innings. In both innings, they loaded the bases with two outs and in each instance the Cardinals popped up to end the inning.
The game opened with both offenses doing some damage. ASU scored three runs in the top of the first and the Cardinals responded with three in their half of the inning. UIW would score in each of the first five innings and came back from two deficits to take a three-run lead.
The Cardinals had 13 hits and drew eight walks on the evening, but left 15 runners on base.
Derrick Walls (San Antonio/Reagan HS) went 3-for-3 with three runs, a triple, an RBI, three walks and two stolen bases to lead the team.
John Zule (San Antonio/Stevens HS) had two hits, including a triple and drove in three runs.
Jordan Littlefield (Marion/Marion HS) and
Lukas Miller (Boise, ID/Timberline HS) each added two hits in the game.
Dylan Boss (Boerne/Boerne HS) took the loss after allowing nine hits, 10 runs and six walks in 6.0 innings. He struck out six on the night as saw his record fall to 3-3 on the year.
Joe Mills (Allen/Allen HS) pitched 3.0 shutout innings in relief.
The Rams had 12 hits and drew six walks while leaving eight runners on base. Andrew LaCombe went 4-for-5 with two runs and a home run. Lee Neumann had a home run, a triple and four RBI's. Relief pitcher Jake Albert pitched 2.0 innings of relief to earn the win. James Conlee pitched a shutout seventh inning and Bryant Rutledge closed out the game with two scoreless innings to get the save. The Rams committed a season high six errors in the game, but they only resulted in two unearned runs.
The two teams will play on Saturday in a 3 p.m. doubleheader.
