SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word men's tennis team put together a strong weekend with a 6-2 win at Laredo Community College on Friday and a 6-2 win at St. Mary's on Saturday.
On Friday, the Cardinals (4-2) won all three doubles matches at Laredo as they quickly built a solid lead. In singles play,
Jair Assuncao (Londrina, Brazil/Carmina Grabner) picked up a good win at #2 singles 6-4, 6-4 over Derbani.
Tucker Brown (New Braunfels/New Braunfels HS) and
Luke Trautmann (San Antonio/Health Careers HS) followed with straight set wins at #5 and #6 singles to clinch the match.
The Saturday morning match with the Rattlers started with the Cardinals winning two of three doubles matches. The team of
Mario Jakovljevic (Osijek, Croatia/Davor Hilas) and Assuncao won 8-6 over Zachary Nicholson and Jared Fellows at #1 doubles.
UIW nearly swept the singles matches winning at #1 through #4. Assuncao and Jakovljevic won in straight sets at #1 and #2, respectively.
Brandon Davis (New Braunfels/New Braunfels HS) knocked off Fellows in straight sets 6-4, 6-1 at #3 singles while Brown defeated Carlos Olea 6-2, 6-0 at #4 singles.
The Cardinals are back in action on March 1 at 10:00 a.m. at Midwestern State.
