Brandon Davis wielded a tennis racket while Monica Acuna swung a bat and both were significant enough to earn best of the week honors at Incarnate Word for the period February 4 through February 10.
Those two now go onto the ballots for athlete of the year honors as selected by UIW coaches and athletic administrators. All year long at least one male and at least one female athlete are determined to have had superior performances for their teams over specific seven-day time frames. Once all the athletic schedules are completed in the spring or summer the vote is taken for best of the year.
BRANDON DAVIS
Over the designated time frame, the first week of the tennis season at Incarnate Word, Davis was dominant playing at either number five or six singles for the Cardinals.
Three matches, three wins for the junior from New Braunfels.
He was so dominant that in four of the six sets he played he did not lose a single game. As the Cardinals won two matches in the week he went 6-0, 6-0 and 6-3, 6-3.
UIW did drop the final match of the week but again Davis was perfect winning 6-0, 6-0 for one of two team points.
MONICA ACUNA
Monica Acuna swung a big bat for the softball Cardinals during a week which included four games. At the plate she went six safe hits out of 12 at-bats for an even .500 average.
Her six teammates batted in gave her the team lead for the young season. She also scored twice herself. Then, she clubbed a pair of home runs to take over the lead in that statistic. Over at Texas Lutheran in game one of a doubleheader one of her three hits was a game-winner for UIW.
Acuna is a senior third baseman out of San Antonio's Business Careers School at Holmes.
