A Tough Loss

Box Score SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – On Senior Night, the University of the Incarnate Word men's soccer team dropped a 2-1 decision to visiting Grand Canyon University in double overtime at Benson Stadium.

The Cardinals (6-7-1) took a lead just 3:48 into the match and then held onto the lead for the next 76 minutes until the Lopes (4-13-1) pulled even with a goal in the 80th minute.  UIW threatened to score a number of times over the final 10 minutes of regulation, but could not find the game-winner.

The Cardinals nearly won the game twice in the first 1:30 of the first overtime.  Freshman Ben Conway (Wigan, UK/Hawkley Hall) had an open look from inside the box, but he shot was saved by Felipe Reyes.  Moments later, Jonathan Camarena (El Paso/Del Valle HS) curled a shot from the left wing that missed the post by inches going wide.

In the second overtime period, the Cardinals had a couple chances late, but were unable to convert.  With 30 seconds to play, UIW earned a corner kick and sent extra men forward.  The ball was cleared by the Lopes and they went on a quick counter attack.  Alberto Sanchez Garcia dribbled the ball quickly down the right side and then crossed it over to Gerrit Thomes who took one touch and then slotted the ball past a diving Jarred Kahan (Houston/Clear Brook HS) with only 10 seconds showing on the clock.

The teams played pretty evenly throughout the contest with the Cardinals holding a slight edge in attacking opportunities.  UIW fired 19 shots with six on goal and earned 13 corner kicks.  GCU attempted 17 shots with eight on goal, but only had two corner kicks.

The Cardinals put a goal on the board when Placide Buduri (San Antonio/Clark HS) crossed the ball to Conway at the top of the box and he fired a shot into the top left hand corner of the net for his third goal of the season.

Grand Canyon's game-tying goal came off a brilliant header by Sanchez Garcia.  Daniel Wall sent in a cross from the right side and hit Garcia in stride right in front of the net.

The Cardinals had 10 seniors honored before the game as part of the Senior Night ceremonies.  The team closes out the season on Saturday at Nebraska-Omaha at 1 p.m.
