Box Score HOUSTON, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word volleyball team picked up a nice four-set win at fellow first-year Southland Conference member Houston Baptist University on Saturday 25-22, 15-25, 25-21, 25-23 at Sharp Gym.
The Cardinals (6-8, 2-4) were not as efficient as the Huskies (7-11, 2-4) on the attack, but attempted 20 more total attacks and had 11 more kills in the contest. The UIW attacking numbers were skewed by a poor second set where they had a -.026 attack. However, in the other three sets the team had at least a .244 attack in each set.
The teams split the first two sets and in the third and fourth sets the Cardinals were able to close each in strong fashion. In the third set, the Cardinals turned a 16-15 deficit into a 25-21 win and in the final set they trailed 20-18 before scoring seven of the last 10 points of the match.
The Cardinals finished the match with 60 kills, a .194 attack percentage, 68 digs and seven blocks.
Shaina Garza (San Antonio/Warren HS) led the team with 16 kills and added 14 digs while fellow freshman
Brittani Dear (La Vernia/La Vernia HS) had 10 kills and a team high 21 digs.
Angelique Vidaurri (San Antonio/Southwest HS) added 15 kills and a .278 attack.
Danielle Suarez (San Antonio/Antonian HS) dished out 30 assists and had 10 digs for a double-double.
The Huskies had 49 kills, a .241 attack, 64 digs and six blocks. Caiti Wenger led the way with 15 kills and a .400 attack while Jessica Wooten had a double-double with 11 kills, 11 digs and three blocks. Kayla Armer led all players with 38 assists and contributed 10 digs.
The Cardinals are back in action on Tuesday at Texas A&M-Kingsville at 7 p.m.
