Box Score CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word volleyball team lost in four sets at Southland Conference rival Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Thursday night 25-21, 25-22, 22-25, 25-16.
The Cardinals (5-8, 1-4) had chances to win each of the first two sets, but could not pull them out. UIW trailed 19-17 in the first set before the Islanders (9-8, 4-1) took the next three points to take control of the set. In the second set, the teams were tied 18 times during the set, including 22-22. Finally, the Islanders scored the final three points of the set on two kills and a block to take a commanding 2-0 lead.
In the third set, it looked like the Cardinals were going to go down without a fight. They trailed 20-11 when they manufactured a massive comeback. After a service error by the Islanders,
Shaina Garza (San Antonio/Warren HS) served up nine consecutive points with four coming on UIW kills and two on blocks. After A&M-Corpus Christi scored to tie the game at 21-21, the Cardinals scored four of the next five points to force a fourth set.
In the fourth set, the Cardinals led 7-5, but the Islanders took over from their and won the set going away.
The Cardinals finished the match with 52 kills, 67 digs and 7.0 blocks while posting a .132 attack percentage.
Angelique Vidaurri (San Antonio/Southwest HS) led the team with 14 kills and a .250 attack while Garza had 10 kills and 20 digs.
Danielle Suarez (San Antonio/Antonian HS) and
Taylor McClelland (Cypress/Cypress Ranch HS) each had 22 assists.
The Islanders had 61 kills, 78 digs and 8.0 blocks. They had a team attack percentage of .255. Ivy Baresh led the team with 16 kills and 18 digs. Brianna Brink and Sarah Sanchez each had 12 kills and a .333 attack percentage. Logen Bourque directed the attack with 57 assists while Hailey King contributed 18 digs.
The Cardinals are back in action on Saturday at Houston Baptist.
