Box Score ABILENE, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word volleyball team used a superior attack to sweep Abilene Christian on the road 25-15, 25-19, 25-22 at Moody Coliseum.
The Cardinals (9-9, 4-5) evened up their overall season record and are now only one game under .500 in the Southland Conference. UIW posted a season high .337 attack percentage and attacked at a rate greater than .300 in all three sets.
After an easy first set victory, the Cardinals found the road a little tougher in the second set. The Wildcats (5-12, 1-8) fought hard and tied the set at 19-19 after kills by Jennifer Loerch and Neely Borger. However, the Cardinals closed out the set with six consecutive points. A kill by setter
Danielle Suarez (San Antonio/Antonian HS) got things started and then
Brittani Dear (La Vernia/La Vernia HS) served up the next five points to take the set.
In the third and final set, the lead went back and forth between the two teams until the score stood tied at 22-22. The Cardinals were able to close out the match with three consecutive kills from
Angelique Vidaurri (San Antonio/Southwest HS),
Meaghan Patterson (Helotes/O'Connor HS) and Dear to give them the win.
Dear had her best match as a Cardinal with 11 kills, 17 digs and a .556 attack percentage. Vidaurri matched Dear with 11 kills and had a .350 attack.
Jaina Jackson (Huntley, IL/Huntley HS) added eight kills and a .500 attack. Suarez finished with 20 assists and eight digs while
Taylor McClelland (Cypress/Cypress Ranch HS) dished out 17 assists and had three aces.
The Wildcats only managed 32 kills and also had seven fewer digs than the Cardinals. Loerch led the team with 11 kills and a .304 attack while Sarah Siemens handed out 30 assists. Madison Hoover led all players with 18 digs.
The Cardinals are back in action on Thursday at 7 p.m. at New Orleans.
