Men's Soccer Plays Home Opener

SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – It has taken seven weeks, but the University of the Incarnate Word men's soccer team will finally host their home opener on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. against Trinity University at Benson Stadium.

The Cardinals (4-4) have done well in their first season at the NCAA Division I level playing seven road games and one neutral site contest.  All-American Vinny Bailey (Southport, Eng./King George V) leads the team with five goals, including a penalty kick goal in the team's last outing, a 3-0 win at Mercer.  The Cardinals are 3-1 in their last four matches with the only loss coming at nationally ranked Dayton in overtime.

UIW is averaging 1.875 goals per game and giving up 1.5 goals per game.  The defense is led by James Nero (Charlotte, NC/Olympic HS) who is the only field player on the team to have played every minute this year.  Goalkeeper Jarred Kahan (Houston/Clear Brook HS) sports a 1.45 goals against average and has made 28 saves.

The Tigers (10-2-1) are one of the top teams in NCAA Division III and boast seven players who have scored at least four goals this year.  Yuri Ribeiro is the team's leading scorer with six goals and eight assists for 20 points while Jonny Lawson has scored a team high seven goals.  Starting goalkeeper Matt Cardone has a 0.55 goals against average and the team has eight shutouts for the year.
