Box Score SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – A goal with less than two minutes remaining in regulation gave visiting Houston Baptist a 2-1 victory over the University of the Incarnate Word women's soccer team on Sunday afternoon at Benson Stadium.
There were moderate showers coming down on the field in the first half. The Cardinals (9-5, 3-4) and the Huskies (4-8-1, 3-3) were very scrappy with the ball and neither team was able to gain the upper hand for most of the match. In the first half, both teams took seven shots. UIW scored first in the 18
th minute when
Mikaela Noriega (Helotes/Brandeis HS) found a deflected ball in front of the goal after
Sarah Johnson (Austin/Home School) had sent a corner kick into the mixer.
Shortly afterwards, the Huskies responded when Molly Missimer shot from 15 yards out and got the ball past UIW goalkeeper,
Heather Kowalik (Boerne/Champion HS) on the right post. Rebekah Tovar was credited with the assist at 26:42.
The showers cleared for the half time break and the first 15 minutes of the second half. UIW took six more shots in the half, but could not get one past Patty Walrath.
Sydney Solomon (Schertz/Randolph HS) supplied seven crosses and three shots the entire game and gave the Huskies defense a lot of trouble. Solomon, along with eight other Cardinals, played the entire match.
The game came to a bitter end for the Cardinals when Rebekah Tovar found the ball in front of the goal after an Elizabeth Adams shot hit the post and the ball traveled in front of the line to the other post. There was 1:10 left on the clock.
UIW will be playing their next three games on the road. First on the schedule is Abilene Christian next Sunday, October 20, at 1 p.m. in Abilene. The following Friday, October 24, the Cardinals will face McNeese State at 7 p.m. in Lake Charles, LA. Their last road game before returning to Benson Stadium will be against Lamar University on Sunday, October 27, at 1 p.m.
