Box Score CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word women's soccer team took care of business on Friday afternoon at Southland Conference rival Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and won 3-0 at Dugan Stadium.
The Cardinals (9-4, 3-3) dominated the game from the outset and outshot the Islanders (2-10, 1-5) 17-2 in the first half. UIW broke through on the score board midway through the first half when
Sarah Flores (Harlingen/South HS) went 1-on-1 with the goalkeeper and beat her to the left side at 23:43. UIW kept the pressure up over the next seven minutes firing six shots, but they were unable to get a second goal before half time.
The Cardinals did not let the Islanders hang around very long in the second half. Flores set up
Katie Miller (Tyler/Tyler JC) on her team-high ninth goal of the season at 49:52. Four minutes later, freshman
Abigail Koenigs (San Antonio/Brandeis HS) put the game out of reach when she collected a crossing pass from
Sydney Solomon (Schertz/Randolph HS) and fired a shot into the left side of the goal at 53:57.
The UIW defense did well to earn the shutout. The Islanders were able to earn a few scoring chances in the half, but could not find the back of the net. UIW starting goalkeeper
Heather Kowalik (Boerne/Champion HS) recorded three saves and picked up the victory before being subbed out for the final 11:30 of the contest.
The Cardinals finished the match with 25 shots, including 14 shots on goal. Miller was particularly active in front of the net taking seven shots to lead the team. The Islanders finished 10 shots. Goalkeeper Audrey Baldwin was forced to make 11 saves in the match.
The Cardinals are back in action on Sunday afternoon at home against SLC foe Houston Baptist at 1 p.m.
