SAN ANTONIO -- The University of the Incarnate Word women's soccer team struggled to get its offense going, as the Cardinals played a scoreless draw with visiting UTRGV Sunday afternoon.
Facing an Vaqueros team that came in with just one point in Southland Conference play, UIW, which entered the day one point behind Lamar for first place in the SLC, held a 19-7 shot advantage, but was never able to push one into the back of the net.
The Cardinals briefly appeared to have finally broken through when a
Montanna Mathews header got past UTRG keeper Veronica Pacione with 6:13 to play, but an offsides call negated the would-be game-winner.
Despite the disappointing result, UIW, which is 5-2-1 in conference, did end the game tied with Lamar (5-1-1) atop the SLC standings, both teams at 16 points. Lamar is at Southeastern Louisiana at 5 p.m. this evening.
The Cardinals have two regular season games remaining. The first of which will be at Stephen F. Austin at 1 p.m. next Sunday.
