UIW Hits the Beach

CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS – The University of the Incarnate Word women's soccer team heads to the Gulf Coast on Friday afternoon for a Southland Conference match against first-year program Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at 4 p.m.

The Cardinals (8-4, 2-3) are hoping to even up their conference record against the Islanders (2-9, 1-4).  UIW have won two of their last three matches in conference play with the only loss a double overtime match against Central Arkansas.  Senior Katie Miller (Tyler/Tyler JC) leads the team with eight goals and three assists, including a pair of game-winning goals.  The team has outscored the opposition, 34-17 and has five players with at least three goals on the season.

The Cardinals defense looks to central defenders Sarah Parker (San Antonio/Marshall HS) and Elizabeth Washington (Frisco/Centennial HS) to keep the opponents away from goal.  UIW has allowed just 7.8 shot attempts per game.  Heather Kowalik (Boerne/Champion HS) is the team's starting goalkeeper, but has battled an injury over the past few games.  She has a 1.29 goals against average.

The Islanders picked up their first ever SLC victory last Friday when they knocked off McNeese State, 1-0.  Their record belies the fact that they have lost six of their nine matches by just one goal.  Yvette Franco has been the offense for A&M-Corpus Christi with eight goals and three assists for a team that has only scored 13 goals this year.  Audrey Baldwin has played every minute in goal for the squad and has a 2.05 goals against average.

The Cardinals return home on Sunday for a 1 p.m. match against SLC rival Houston Baptist at Benson Stadium.
