Both games of Saturday's Lone Star Conference doubleheader at Sullivan Field provided some late drama as the University of the Incarnate Word baseball team split with visiting Tarleton State University with a 3-2 win and a 14-9 loss.
The results keep UIW at .500 in the Lone Star with an 8-8 record and have them at 13-14 overall.
In game one, Marc Gomez pitched a complete game (seven innings) and struck out seven Texans while allowing just three hits and two runs (both earned). The victory has his record at 3-0 on the year.
Tarleton State struck first with a lead-off triple and a sacrifice fly for a 1-0 lead in the top of the 2nd inning, but Incarnate Word responded with a two-run bottom of the 2nd that happened with two outs on the scoreboard.
Greg Barbaro hit a triple down the right field line and scored on an RBI-single by Jason Stone. Stone would later score on a pass-ball for the 2-0 lead.
Later in the game, however, TSU would get the score tied at 2-2 with a leadoff home run in the top of the 4th.
The drama began in the bottom of the 7th, however, as Incarnate Word got a leadoff single from Derrick Walls and then Hector Flores bunted to advance his teammate to second base. Tarleton State then chose to intentionally walk Adam Pena and then threw four straight pitches outside the strike zone, walking Jordan Littlefield and loading the bases.
It was then that UIW got a fly ball into centerfield from Slade Brown, looking to score Walls from third with a sacrifice fly – but the drive might not have been deep enough and Walls chose to remain at third and the Cardinals then had two-outs and bases still loaded with Lucas Miller at the plate.
Miller, however, never got a chance to be the hero as Tarleton State's pitcher was called for a balk and Walls was able to walk home – giving UIW the 3-2 victory.
In game two, Tarleton State had a 1-0 lead going into the fourth inning when two Cardinal errors, a hit-batter and a grand slam home run all combined to give TSU a 6-0 lead.
From there, Incarnate Word managed just three runs (one in the 5th and two in the 7th) while the Texans continued to build their lead to 14-3 going into the last three outs for Incarnate Word… and they responded with a 6-run inning and made the visitors a bit nervous before they could leave town with the W.
Four of the Cardinals' 14 hits came in the final inning and they were aided by three walks, a hit batter and a wild pitch.
UIW will be on the road this upcoming weekend for a series against Eastern New Mexico University in Portales, New Mexico – starting on Friday with a single, 9-inning contest at 6 p.m. The Cardinals will return home the next weekend for a conference series against West Texas A&M.
