Tuesday night's trip to Victoria for a doubleheader against the Jaguars of University of Houston-Victoria resulted in a split for Incarnate Word with a 4-1 loss and a 14-9 victory.
In game one, the Cardinals had four errors to allow three unearned runs against the Cardinal pitching staff.
UIW (20-17 overall) had chances in the 5th and 6th innings to generate offense – but despite getting help in the form of an error and two walks, the Cardinals only got two hits and one run over the two-inning span and left five players stranded, including a bases loaded situation in the 6th.
Incarnate Word only managed three hits in the first game, while UHV made contact seven times.
In game two, however, UIW jumped out to an early lead, made some mistakes that put the Jaguars back in it, and then got things back under control late for the 14-9 win.
After leading 1-0 after the 1st inning, Incarnate Word erupted for 8 runs in a 6-hit 2nd inning highlighted by a grand slam homer by Wilson Rueter – the only extra base hit of the half-inning.
Houston-Victoria was able to get on the scoreboard, 9-1, in the bottom of the 2nd, but in the bottom of the 4th, the Jaguars scored six runs by only recording one hit – the bulk of the run coming from seven walks and five wild pitches from the Cardinal bullpen.
But, after the damage was done and UIW got the outs to end the 4th, the Cardinals responded with a 3-hit, 1-run top of the 5th and then a 3-hit, 3-run top of the 6th that included an RBI triple by Rueter to score Ryan Flowers.
However, even though UIW was up, 13-7, the Jaguars didn't give up and got two more runs home in the top of the 6th to close the gap to 13-9.
That, however, was the last run UHV would score on the night and Incarnate Word (which added another run in the top of the 7th on an RBI double by Flowers) shut them out in the 7th when Ethan Lutz took over on the mound – striking out a batter, getting the next to fly out to center and then finishing things off by getting the put-out for out number three.
The Cardinals will be back in action on the road on Friday and Saturday, facing off against Texas A&M University-Kingsville in back-to-back days of doubleheaders. Friday's games will take place in Kingsville while Saturday's double-dip wil be played at Whataburger Stadium in Corpus Christi, TX.
TAMUK is tied for first in the Lone Star Conference with Angelo State, while Incarnate Word is a half-game ahead of West Texas A&M for third place in the conference. The series between the Cardinals and Hoggies will play a major role in seeding for the 2012 Lone Star Conference Baseball Championship.
